T he uncertainty, fear, and misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic provides an ideal setting for criminals to take advantage of health-care Providers and patients searching for solutions. Below is a list of just a few illegal operations being perpetrated according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General: Supply shops: Websites and social media posts claiming to sell in-demand medical supplies. They’ll take your money and never deliver the supplies. Fake charities: Scammers asking for money for individuals, groups, and areas affected by the coronavirus. Phishing: Criminals posing as the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to trick people into downloading malware or providing personal and financial information. Don’t click links or open attachments you do not recognize. Investment scams: Online promotions claim a publicly traded company’s product can prevent, detect, or cure COVID-19, which will dramatically boost the company’s stock price. These fake promotions are part of “pump-and-dump” schemes often presented as research reports with a predicted specific target price. If you are aware of or suspect any of the types of schemes referenced above or other issues, please call 1-800-436-6184 or visit https://oig.hhsc.texas.gov to make a report.
